OAKLAND-- The University of California has filled a position that is central to its efforts to attract and admit minorities without affirmative action. UCLA Vice Chancellor Winston Doby has been appointed the new vice president for educational outreach for the UC system, replacing an interim appointee, UC Irvine Vice Chancellor Manuel Gomez.
The previous vice president, Alex Saragoza, resigned in April in the aftermath of criticism over his giving credit to two football players on the Berkeley campus for course work they did not do. Doby, who has been vice chancellor of student affairs at UCLA for 20 years, will start Jan. 1. He will head an extensive educational outreach effort designed to prepare disadvantaged elementary and secondary students for admission to the university.
