AAD Justice Logo Affirmative Action Briefs Flood High Court

February 20 2003

WASHINGTON -- Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, Nike Inc., the American Psychological Association and the New York City Council all want to have their say in the biggest affirmative action case to reach the Supreme Court in decades. Hundreds filed briefs on the use of race in college admissions policies before the Wednesday midnight deadline. The drafters hope the briefs will at least prompt questions during the April 1 arguments in the long-running University of Michigan case.

The Bush administration has asked for permission to argue in favor of whites turned down by the University of Michigan. Justices will rule before July. "It is necessary to ensure that members of all segments of our society receive the education and training they need to become the leaders of tomorrow," argued firms including Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nike, Reebok, American Airlines, United Airlines, ChevronTexaco, Shell, Pfizer, Eli Lilly, Schering-Plough, General Mills, Kellogg, Johnson and Johnson and Northrop Grumman.
